An Afternoon of Crime In A Regional Trial Court: A Glance into Our Judicial System
My much-anticipated schedule to attend a court hearing as an observer in a Regional Trial Court was unexpectedly rescheduled due to health protocols—an evident reflection of the seriousness with which the courts, like other government offices, adhere to safety measures. Stepping into the Hall of Justice, I found myself surrounded by a plethora of alcohol bottles and sanitizing sprays—indicators of the conscientious approach taken by the RTC to ensure a safe environment for all. (By the way, I have intentionally edited this piece so as to remove names or indicators of the Judicial Branch number, the presiding Judge, the City, and the date for purposes of privacy.)
Guided by the amiable personnel who was in-charge of responding to queries, I was directed to the appropriate office, where I humbly sought permission to observe the afternoon court hearings.
Upon encountering the Honorable Judge, her motherly and protective demeanor towards the alleged victims within her courtroom was apparent. Eager to absorb the intricacies of court proceedings, I opted to stay for all scheduled cases that afternoon. The efficiency of the proceedings was notable, as cases moved forward promptly, even in instances where the defendant was absent. Over thirty cases awaited adjudication in that single afternoon—an undeniable testament to the court's commitment to swift justice.
Among the legal virtuosos within the packed courtroom, the assigned Fiscal stood out as the busiest attorney. Taking on the mantle of handling all the criminal cases scheduled that day, his tenacity and dedication to the profession were evident.
Within the realm of criminal cases, one in particular captivated my attention—a sensitive matter concerning a minor's rape case. The defendant's lawyer, the senior-most attorney present, displayed unwarranted confidence, allowing the victim and perpetrator to sit side-by-side, much to the concern of the Honorable Judge. The lawyer's assurance that the hearing focused on the Affidavit of Desistance further fueled the courtroom drama. Her Honor’s righteous anger was palpable as she demanded the presence of the victim's parents, given the Aunt's victim lack legal guardianship. This incident brought my PFR and Criminal law subjects to life, underscoring the practical implications of legal concepts.
While the courtroom atmosphere was marked by gravity, a humorous exchange with one of the lawyers brought unexpected laughter. The lawyer's candid confession, "Dong, if only we were required to attend Court hearings in our first year of Law School, I might have reconsidered becoming a lawyer," elicited shared amusement among legal practitioners. It was a momentary respite amidst the solemnity of the proceedings.
My experience as an RTC observer has provided invaluable insights into the dynamics of the judicial system. The commitment to health protocols, the dedication of legal professionals, the protective spirit of the presiding Judge, and the nuances of courtroom procedures collectively emphasized the significance of upholding justice. This enlightening encounter reaffirmed my appreciation for the legal profession and left an indelible impression on my understanding of the court's critical role in society.
